Glossary

Atsiri — Essential oil in Indonesian, from an Arabic root for perfume.

Besek — A small hand-woven bamboo box, traditionally used across Java for offerings, food and sacred items. At MANDI7, it's our packaging.

Gamelan — The bronze percussion ensemble of Central Java — precise, interlocking rhythms. A different sound to the softer music of West Java's Sunda region.

Kamboja (Frangipani) — One of MANDI7's seven flowers. Carries peace and serenity.

Kantil (White Champaca) — One of MANDI7's seven flowers. Carries spiritual connection.

Kecapi — A small boat-shaped zither, plucked with both hands, central to Sundanese music.

Kembang — "Flower," in Indonesian and Javanese. The root of "mandi kembang."

Kembang setaman — Literally "flowers of the garden" — the traditional mix of rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang and champaca used in Javanese ceremonies. The origin of MANDI7's seven-flower blend.

Kenanga (Ylang-Ylang) — One of MANDI7's seven flowers. Carries joy and happiness.

Mandi bunga — "Flower bath" in Malay — the same ritual practiced across Malaysia and Singapore, especially before weddings or times of change.

Mandi kembang — "Flower bath" in Javanese — bathing with water infused with fragrant petals, to cleanse body and spirit. The tradition MANDI7 is built on.

Mawar (Rose) — Mawar Merah (red rose) carries love and compassion. Mawar Putih (white rose) carries peace and honesty. Both are among MANDI7's seven flowers.

Melati (Jasmine) — One of MANDI7's seven flowers. Carries purity and grace.

Melukat — A Balinese purification ritual using holy water, related in spirit to mandi kembang.

Pulang kampung — Literally "returning to the village" — the Indonesian phrase for going home.

Sedap malam (Tuberose) — Literally "fragrant of the night" — it releases its scent after dark. One of MANDI7's seven flowers.

Sinden — The female vocalist in Sundanese music, whose voice glides between notes rather than landing on them.

Suling — A bamboo flute, breathy and intimate, used in Sundanese music.

Sunda / Sundanese — The region and culture of West Java, known for a softer, more melancholy musical tradition than the gamelan of Central Java.
